"ਹੋਣਾ" ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲ਼ੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਕਾਇਦਾ (irregular) ਕਿਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ। ਇਹਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ:
"ਹੋਣਾ" is one of the most used and most irregular Punjabi verbs. It is conjugated in the present tense as follows:
- I am - ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ/میں ہاں
- You* are - ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ/توں ہیں
- He/she/it is - ਉਹ ਹੈ/اوہ ہے
- We are - ਅਸੀਂ ਹਾਂ/اسیں ہاں
- You* are - ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੋ/تسیں ہو
- They are - ਉਹ ਹਨ/اوہ ہن
*ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਬੋਧਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹਨ: ਤੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ। "ਤੂੰ" ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਰਸਮੀ/ਸਾਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਰਸਮੀ/ਰਿਵਾਜੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਜਾਂ ਬਹੁਵਚਨ ਲਈ।
ਸੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਜਾਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਲਈ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦਕਿ ਉਚੇਚੇ ਰੁਤਬੇ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਜਾਂ ਉਮਰੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਤੁਸੀਂ।
*Punjabi has two types of second person pronouns: ਤੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ, the former for informal use and the latter for formal or plural usage.
So a close friend would be called upon as ਤੂੰ whereas people elder/superior to oneself is addressed as ਤੁਸੀਂ।
